Students Project Raises Funds For Charities

January 29, 2019

A school project to design and build a contemporary table is set to raise funds for four charities through a silent auction.

Saltus SGY1 Design and Technology students Christian Truran, Owen DeCosta, Jared Souza and Charlie Gravestock were all told to “design a new style of a contemporary table of commercial quality that can be sold [via silent auction] to benefit a worthy cause you feel strongly about”.

The finished products are now all on display at Washington Mall and when sold will benefit PALS, Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross and the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.

Philip Heap, Head of DT at Saltus, said the challenge was designed to be project-based learning where students identify a real-world problem and develop its solution.

“Students gain knowledge and skills by working for a longer period of time to investigate and respond to an engaging or complex question, problem or challenge,” he said.

Mr Heap added: “Each student spent a considerable amount of time developing the necessary skills in order to achieve their desired outcome and working with their chosen charity helped them to focus on key areas.

“Often the students would also have to take risks and produce experimental work in order to find solutions and would also seek guidance and support from industry. In essence the PBL study programme nurtures skill and attributes necessary for 21st Century learners and employment in a modern day workforce.”

The tables, along with details of how to place a bid, will be on display at Washington Mall until February 14.
